The Best Places in Colorado to view Fall Foliage

There is a chill in the air, the days are getting shorter, the light is changing and inevitably, Fall is quickly approaching. Living in Colorado, we have some spectacular places to view the golden aspens and other colorful Fall foliage. Get a head start and plan your leisurely day trip or a longer relaxing weekend getaway with Vintage Homes of Denver’s Fall Foliage Guide.

Weather.com predicts that the best time to view the colors in Colorado is from mid September to early October. Click here to see a map for peak viewing times. You can also call the U.S. Forest Service Fall Color Hotline at 1-800-354-4595. It is hard to predict when the leaves will change and for how long they will last, so it is a good idea to keep checking local websites for good times to go.

Don’t forget to pack your camera, good driving tunes, cold weather gear (coats, hats and gloves), a warm cozy blanket, a picnic and thermos of hot apple cider. Now that you are packed and ready to go, you can choose from a variety of scenic routes to take in all that Fall and Colorado has to offer.

Close to Denver Fall Foliage Routes:

The Peak-to-Peak Scenic Byway – This diverse and lovely drive starts in one Historical town, Black Hawk, CO and ends in another, Estes Park, CO. It covers approximately 60 miles and takes about an hour and a half, depending on how many times you stop. I guarantee you will want to stop and take in the breathtaking views and enjoy the vintage charm of Historic towns along the way. If you are feeling Lucky, you can try your hand at striking it rich in one of the many casinos in Black Hawk, or if gambling is not your thing, you can take a little detour and head to Nevadaville, a small and forgotten mining ghost town just minutes from Central City.  To start your tour of the Peak-to-Peak, from Black Hawk you will head north on Hwy. 119 passing by Golden Gate Canyon State Park and through Rollinsville (the Stage Stop Restaurant is a fun place to visit for lunch).  Once in Nederland, you will take a left onto CO-72 until in the town of Raymond then you will proceed on CO 7 past the 14,755 foot Long’s Peak into the town of Estes Park, CO. Estes Park, nestled in the Rocky Mountain National Park, is best known for the Historic Stanley Hotel that was featured in the infamous Jack Nicholson movie, The Shining. Estes Park is also a popular summer destination with many options for camping, hiking, biking, rafting and other outdoor activities

Guanella Pass Scenic Byway – This scenic byway starts in the charming and Historic town of Georgetown, located an hour west of Denver. Take I-70 west to exit 228 and take a left at the round about, once in the Georgetown Historic District, look for the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway signs and follow those  until you get to Clear Creek County Road 381. This newly paved road will take you through a thriving alpine environment, winding switchbacks and will crest below the 14,060 ft. Mount Bierstadt. As you start your descent watch for waterfalls surrounded by golden Aspens, wildlife such as bighorn sheep and moose. The byway ends at U.S. Hwy. 285, from here you can choose to head east back to Denver or head west to Kenosha Pass, an additional 15 minute drive.

Kenosha Pass – Can be reached by taking U.S. Hwy. 285 about 50 miles west of Denver. The pass starts near the town of Grant and winds up to the summit where there is a scenic overlook to the west offering a panoramic view of the town of South Park. Golden aspen thrive on the slopes that surround the town. The pass ends near the town of Jefferson. From here you can head to Fairplay and continue on Hwy. 285 to Buena Vista or head to Alma/Hoosier Pass along CO State Hwy. 9 and end in Breckenridge.

Cottonwood Pass – From Buena Vista, you will head west at the only stop light in town and follow Chaffee County Rd. 306 or Cottonwood Pass Rd., 60 miles to the town of Almont near Gunnison.  Near the 12,126 foot Summit, the road name changes to Gunnison County Rd. 209. The pass is paved on the west and is a gravel road to the east.  It is surrounded by many of the majestic 14-er Collegiate Mountains where peaks rise to greet the clouds and sky. The Taylor River follows the pass and once past the summit guides you down to the Taylor Park, Taylor River Canyon and Taylor Park Reservoir, a popular destination for fly fishing.  This drive will provide you with breathtaking mountain views and a valley full of rich fall colors.

Buffalo Pass –  This dirt road just west of Steamboat Springs winds 8 miles up toward the Continental Divide. It is lined with rows of golden aspen groves. During peak viewing times, locals recomend hiking up the Zirkel Wilderness Area’s Three Island Lake Trail.

Other options:

Gold Camp Road from Colorado Springs to Victor then Colorado 67 through Cripple Creek and North to Divide.

Colorado 14 through Poudre Canyon west of Fort Collins to the top of Cameron Pass.

Fall River Road from I-70 (Exit 238) to St. Mary’s Glacier

Routes Farther from Denver:

Maroon Bells – The most photographed mountains in Colorado are located 10 miles from Aspen, CO up Maroon Creek Road.  These iconic 14,000 foot peaks are surrounded by pristine National Forest Land and are mirrored by the Maroon Lake below. Access to Maroon Bells is limited to bus tours or non-motorized transportation. Some exceptions are made for cars. Please click here for more information.

LaVeta Pass –  If you would like to take a weekend trip to the Southern part of Colorado you can start by taking I-25 south to the Walsenburg exit and take State Hwy. 160 over La Veta Pass towards Durango.  La Veta Pass peaking at an elevation of 9,400 feet and nestled in the San Luis Valley is surrounded by the Spanish Peaks and Sangra de Christo Mountains, making a beautiful backdrop for the fall foliage that lines the pass.  From here, head through Alamosa, Monte Vista, Del Norte (check out the Organic Peddler and Piece of Art Cafe– a great place for lunch and coffee) and climb over the spectacular Wolf Creek Pass with a wonderful scenic overlook, and onto Pagosa Springs and finally into Durango. This is a 7 hour drive, but beautiful and worth it!  Plus you get to visit many charming historic towns along the way.

San Juan Skyway –  This byway is a real jewel of a drive taking you on a 236 mile loop through the majestic San Juan mountains and towns rich with history.  You will start in Durango, a well preserved descendant of the Old West, and head up U.S.Hwy. 550 toward Silverton and on to Ouray.  Both of these towns are true victorian gems and showcase many well preserved homes and buildings.  Ouray also features many natural Hot Springs.  The stretch between Silverton and Ouray is called the “Million Dollar Highway” – a drive likened to that of a Roller Coaster Ride due to its narrow lanes, winding roads, steep drop-offs, and lack of guard rails.  For experienced mountain drivers, this ride is a thrill, for others I would suggest taking it nice and slow.  The views along this drive are amazing and worth the time to savor.  From Ouray you will head to Ridgway and then on to Placerville where you will head southeast on CO 145 to Telluride.  Telluride is known for its world-class skiing and its Film, Jazz and music festivals.   From here you will head to Dolores then west to Mancos Rd. (CO 184), you can stop and discover how our ancestors lived at Mesa Verde National Park.   Continue east to U.S. Hwy. 550 and take that back into Durango.  You have completed the loop and are filled with a sense of awe and wonder.  You have gained knowledge and insight and are that much richer for the experience.  It is recommended that you take two days to complete the loop so you can enjoy the many wonders of this drive.

San-Juan-Skyway

Map Courtesy of The Colorado Vacation DIrectory

Dallas Divide – The Dallas Divide is saddled between the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre Plateau and represents an epic fall Colorado drive. Starting near Ridgway, on Colorado Hwy. 62, visitors can get an amazing view of Mount Sneffels, one of Colorado’s 14ers, and the expansive Sneffels Wilderness Area, which is popular for camping, hiking and biking. The route eventually connects with Hwy. 45 and Lizard Head Pass, which offers views of Wilson Peak, the very mountain that inspired the iconic Coors logo. From here you can head onto Telluride or swing back around for another go. If you want some adventure and a sampling of all the landscapes the San Juans have to offer, you can look for signs off Colorado Hwy. 62 for the Last Dollar Road, and take a left off the Highway until you reach a fork in the road. At the fork you take a right into the town of Sawpit.

Kebler Pass – Just outside Crested Butte is one of the world’s best places to see golden aspens in the fall. It boasts one of the largest Aspen Groves in North America. It is supposedly the largest living organism on the planet, all sharing the same root system.  Colorado Photographer, John Fielder, has visited and photographed this site many times.  Mid September is the usual peak time for viewing the fall colors. Kebler is not as scary as some reviewers mention, though taking the Ohio Pass fork can be a bit scary. From Crested Butte take County Road 12 and from Carbondale take Route 133 and then jump on to County Road 12 near Paonia State Park.

Winterize your Home with our Fall Checklist!

Winterize your home with our Fall Checklist, and enjoy a cozy, warm winter worry free!

images-2

Kids have returned to school and Fall is quickly approaching, yet the days are still long and sunny, which makes it the perfect time to get your home ready for Winter.  Follow this easy check list and you will be cozy, warm, and worry free during the cold Winter months.

images-1

Clean out Gutters

  • Clean out the Gutters – If your gutters are full of debris, leaves, etc., it is a good idea to have them cleaned to prevent any leaks, and potential damage to the roof, siding, and wood trim.  Hiring an outside company to clean your gutters runs anywhere from $75 – $225.
  • Check Your Heating System –  There is nothing worse than having your furnace stop working on the coldest day of the year!  It is always a good idea to make sure your furnace/heating system is working at optimum performance.  Call a local HVAC technician to inspect your heating unit to make sure it is in good working order and repair and that the Carbon Monoxide levels are safe. Look for a heating and air-conditioning contractor that belongs to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America and who employs technicians certified by the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) program.  After inspection, make sure to replace the furnace filter and start the season off fresh.
  • Clean and Cover your Air Conditioning Unit – Your cooling system has worked hard for you all summer, now it is time to hose off the fan blades and condensing coils and clean them of any dirt or debris.  Make sure to cover your condensing unit with a waterproof Air Conditioning cover to protect it from water, rust and debris.
  • Inspect your Roof – Scan the roof for loose, missing or damaged shingles that can allow moisture to seep into your home.  If there is damage, call a handyman for smaller areas, and a roofing company for larger areas.   Check and repair breaks in the flashing seals around vent stacks and chimneys.  If your roof is flat and surfaced with asphalt and pebbles, blow all leaves, pine needles, etc. off the roof, as they can hold moisture and eventually cause damage.
  • Caulk around Windows and Doors – Those drafts can create a hefty heating bill, that is why it is a good idea to caulk any space wider than a nickel, between siding and windows or door frames, with Silicone Exterior Caulk.  Silicone caulk will not shrink and is impervious to the elements.  Add weather stripping around doors as well, to prevent chilly drafts.
  • Drain your Sprinkler System and turn off outside faucets – Call in a professional to blow out your sprinkler system and spigots to prevent leeks, freezing and busted pipes. Turn off the water supply to outside spigots.  If there are exposed or non-insulated pipes, be sure to wrap them with electrical heating tape and then wrap them in foam insulation.
  • Call a Chimney Sweep – Have your chimney inspected for nests, squirrels and other animals, check the flue damper operation to ensure that the flue fully opens and closes.  Make sure the chimney is clean and in good repair so that you can fully and safely enjoy a roaring fire in your fireplace this winter.
  • Reverse your Ceiling Fans – If you have a ceiling fan, switch it to reverse so that all the warm air will be pushed down, and you may be able to turn your thermostat down a degree or two.
  • Know where all your fall/winter gear is – Where is your rake, snow shovel, snow blower, rock salt, or sand?  Get prepared and stocked up for what the winter may have in store for you.
