Winterize your home with our Fall Checklist, and enjoy a cozy, warm winter worry free!

Kids have returned to school and Fall is quickly approaching, yet the days are still long and sunny, which makes it the perfect time to get your home ready for Winter.  Follow this easy check list and you will be cozy, warm, and worry free during the cold Winter months.

Clean out Gutters

• Clean out the Gutters – If your gutters are full of debris, leaves, etc., it is a good idea to have them cleaned to prevent any leaks, and potential damage to the roof, siding, and wood trim.  Hiring an outside company to clean your gutters runs anywhere from $75 – $225.

• Check Your Heating System –  There is nothing worse than having your furnace stop working on the coldest day of the year!  It is always a good idea to make sure your furnace/heating system is working at optimum performance.  Call a local HVAC technician to inspect your heating unit to make sure it is in good working order and repair and that the Carbon Monoxide levels are safe. Look for a heating and air-conditioning contractor that belongs to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America and who employs technicians certified by the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) program.  After inspection, make sure to replace the furnace filter and start the season off fresh.

• Clean and Cover your Air Conditioning Unit – Your cooling system has worked hard for you all summer, now it is time to hose off the fan blades and condensing coils and clean them of any dirt or debris.  Make sure to cover your condensing unit with a waterproof Air Conditioning cover to protect it from water, rust and debris.

• Inspect your Roof – Scan the roof for loose, missing or damaged shingles that can allow moisture to seep into your home.  If there is damage, call a handyman for smaller areas, and a roofing company for larger areas.   Check and repair breaks in the flashing seals around vent stacks and chimneys.  If your roof is flat and surfaced with asphalt and pebbles, blow all leaves, pine needles, etc. off the roof, as they can hold moisture and eventually cause damage.

• Caulk around Windows and Doors – Those drafts can create a hefty heating bill, that is why it is a good idea to caulk any space wider than a nickel, between siding and windows or door frames, with Silicone Exterior Caulk.  Silicone caulk will not shrink and is impervious to the elements.  Add weather stripping around doors as well, to prevent chilly drafts.

• Drain your Sprinkler System and turn off outside faucets – Call in a professional to blow out your sprinkler system and spigots to prevent leeks, freezing and busted pipes. Turn off the water supply to outside spigots.  If there are exposed or non-insulated pipes, be sure to wrap them with electrical heating tape and then wrap them in foam insulation.

• Call a Chimney Sweep – Have your chimney inspected for nests, squirrels and other animals, check the flue damper operation to ensure that the flue fully opens and closes.  Make sure the chimney is clean and in good repair so that you can fully and safely enjoy a roaring fire in your fireplace this winter.

• Reverse your Ceiling Fans – If you have a ceiling fan, switch it to reverse so that all the warm air will be pushed down, and you may be able to turn your thermostat down a degree or two.

• Know where all your fall/winter gear is – Where is your rake, snow shovel, snow blower, rock salt, or sand?  Get prepared and stocked up for what the winter may have in store for you.

Fourth of July Festivities in Denver

Summer is officially here and the Fourth of July weekend is right around the corner.  Whether you are looking for cultural, family-friendly or sporty activities to fill you holiday weekend, let Vintage Homes of Denver be your guide:

Fourth of July Festivities in Denver:

Independence Eve – July 3rd at 8pm – The free annual Independence Eve Celebration held in Civic Center Park is a great way to kick off the weekend and enjoy a great fireworks display.  This year’s event will feature pop and patriotic music from MIX, CU Denver’s award-winning a capella group, and the legendary Hazel Miller.  Music and light shows start the celebration at 8 p.m. Fireworks start at dusk.  Bring a picnic (no glass bottles) and blanket or low back lawn chair to enjoy the festivities.  Seating is first come, first served, so it is a good idea to arrive early.  Light rail and the 16th Street Mall shuttles are an easy and cost effective way to get downtown.

Red, White and You – July 3rd at Clement Park, 7306 W. Bowles Ave. Littleton, CO from 5pm-10pm.  A fun-filled community event produced annually by the Foothills Park & Recreation District draws nearly 35,000 people each year.  Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy: live entertainment, food concessions, kids activities, inflatable rides and bounce houses, community business booths, beer & wine garden and a fireworks display. Entry into the event is free.

Concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater – The Colorado 4th of July tradition continues with Blue’s Traveler performing live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, one of Denver’s best and most beautiful places to see a live show.  Join this soulful blue’s rock band along with Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth and Uncle Cracker for an extraordinary evening of live music, people watching, and breath taking views.  Overlooking the city at an elevation of 6,400 feet, concert goers get the pleasure of viewing firework displays across the Denver Metro Area.  Doors open at 5pm and the show starts at 6pm.  No outside fireworks are allowed.

Fireworks at Sporting Events – Whether it is Baseball, Soccer or Lacrosse, all three of Denver’s Teams play on July 4th and offer Firework Displays after the games.

Colorado Rockies vs.Los Angeles Dodgers – Coors Field , 6:10 pm – Fireworks to follow.

Colorado Rapids vs. the Columbus Crew – Dicks Sporting Goods Park, 7:30 pm – Fireworks to follow.

Denver Outlaws vs. the Boston Cannons – Sport’s Authority Field at Mile High, 7:00 pm – Fireworks to follow.

Cherry Creek Arts Festival – July 4th – 6th, This annual, award-winning, outdoor Festival celebrating the visual, performing and culinary arts draws over 350,000 visitors each year.  Stroll through the streets of Cherry Creek North and let  your senses be delighted with works of art from International Visual Artists.  Visit the Cultural Pavilion to enjoy live theater, dance and musical performances from performers around the globe.   Learn secrets from top chefs and enjoy culinary delights from some of Denver’s top eateries at the Culinary Avenue station.  Let your young ones get creative at Artivity Avenue featuring fun interactive activities.   Admission to the Festival is Free and hours are 10am – 8pm on Friday and Saturday and 10am – 6pm on Sunday.

First Friday Art Walk – July 4th – Stroll through 1 or more of 6 neighborhood Art Districts on the Fourth of July and treat your eyes to some of Denver’s best local Visual Art.   Galleries and other cultural centers stay open late on the First Friday of each month, year round: Enjoy Art, Food, Wine and Fun!  Here is a list of the neighborhoods that host First Friday Art Walks:

• Art District on Santa Fe – Visit Santa Fe Blvd. from 3rd Ave. to 12th Ave. With over 100 galleries you are bound to see some Art that you love.  First Fridays feature local food trucks and a performance stage.
• Golden Triangle Museum District – located just south of Downtown Denver, is home to eight of Denver’s Museums, including History Colorado Center , Denver Art Museum (DAM), and Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art.   The GTMD is a creative center for Art and Culture.  Aside from Museums, you will find galleries, artist’s studios, boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, and residences all committed to “the art of living with art.” 
• River North Art District (RiNo) – RiNo, located North of Downtown Denver in a revitalized warehouse district, is rapidly becoming a hotspot for artistic types.   There is quite an array of creative businesses, including architects, art galleries, furniture makers, illustrators, painters, media artists, photographers, sculptors, and a wealth of studio spaces.  Many restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques have also started calling this district home.
• Tennyson Street Cultural District – located in the Berkley/Highland’s Neighborhood, Tennyson Street offers a unique offering of visual, culinary and performing arts.  Enjoy music, food and drink from 38th Ave. to 45th Ave. along Tennyson St.
• Navajo Street Art District – an upstart art district small in scale but not short on History.  The Pirate gallery has been a pioneer of contemporary art for over 25 years.  This district features many contemporary, co-operative, and non-profit galleries and organizations.
• South Pearl Street -Also a smaller district, Pearl St. provides a few quaint galleries, amazing restaurants and cute boutiques. Galleries are located near the 1500 S. block of Pearl St.

Traditionally, First Friday starts at 5pm and ends at 9pm. You may want to check individual websites for each events times.  Enjoy some Art and Culture and then find a place to watch the fabulous fireworks.

Park Hill Fourth of July Parade – The 5th Annual Park Hill 4th of July Parade is a great family-friendly, community event held July 4th at 1:30 pm, along 23rd Avenue from Dexter St. to Krameria St.  Come celebrate by viewing colorful, patriotic floats, marching bands, bikers, classic cars, acrobats and more.

Liberty 4-Mile Run – Friday, July 4th at Washington Park – Start your day off with some exercise, fresh air and fun!  The 4 mile run/walk starts at 8:30 am and the Kids Firecracker Run starts at 10:30 am. Wear your best red, white and blue gear to show your patriotic spirit, as prizes will be awarded for the best dressed adult and child.  Finish the race at the post race expo and enjoy food, beverages and fun for the whole family.  Proceeds from the race benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Denver’s Parks offer many ways to enjoy Summer

June, 21st – Today marks the first day of Summer and things are heating up in Denver.  Aside from enjoying nature, Denver’s Parks offer many ways to enjoy the summer, whether it be sports, music, food, or relaxing.  Here is a guide to enjoying the beautiful Parks of Denver and some of the activities they host.

City Park – a premier 330-acre park located in the Heart of the City shares land with the Denver Zoo, Museum of Nature and Science and Imax.  It has 2 beautiful lakes, a pavilion, 2 play grounds, tennis courts, horseshoes and fields for soccer, and baseball.  Some of the events they host this summer are:

City Park Esplanade Farmer’s Market – Held every Sunday near the Sullivan Fountain at E. Colfax Ave. and Columbine St. from 9am-1pm.  Stroll the market and feast your eyes and taste buds on local farm fresh produce, cheeses, wines, herbs and other delights.

City Park Jazz – Heading into its 28th season, there is a great line up of FREE Jazz concerts held every Sunday at the City Park Pavilion from 6pm-8pm.  Bring your own blanket or chairs, a picnic or enjoy many of the fairs provided by local food trucks.  No Glass Bottles are allowed and participants are encouraged to park in the Denver Zoo or Museum of Nature and Science parking lots.  Concerts are held Rain of Shine. Whether going on a date or an outing with the family, you can’t go wrong with this free event.

Colorado Black Arts Festival – Brings the best of visual and performing arts for its 28th annual festival held, July 11th – 13th in City Park West.  This year’s theme is “Expressions”  which can be conveyed in many ways through various media such as Visual Art, Music, Dance, Theater, Literature and Food.   The Goal of the Colorado Black Arts Festival is to unite and enlighten the Colorado Community through such presentations.  Come and enjoy performances, attractions and art such as: National R&B recording artist Howard Hewett, The Cleo Parker Robinson Summer Dance Institute “Pomoja”, Children’s Pavilion for Art and Learning, and The Art Garden and Boogaloo Celebration Parade.  Visit the Link above for more details.

Washington Park – Located just South of Downtown Denver in the popular Wash Park Neighborhood, is a playground for adults and children alike.  On a summer day you will find people out on the lake in paddle boats, or cruising on their bikes around the paved paths .  The main field is usually filled with Volley Ball nets, picnic blankets and sun worshipers.  Washington Park has a dirt running trail, paved bike paths, 2 lakes, 2 playgrounds, picnic areas, the Washington Park Boat House, a fire station and Recreation Center with Indoor Pool.  Some of the events hosted here this summer are:

Denver Municipal Band Performances – The Denver Municipal Band founded in the 1860’s is the oldest professional concert band located in the continental United States.  Their performances kick off the 4th of July weekend with two shows: The Brass Band will perform at 11:00 am at the Boat House and the Concert Band will perform later at 7:30 pm.  All of their other performances will be held on Sundays at 7:30 pm.

Vintage Market’s and Flea Market’s have become popular over the last 15 years.  They are great places to find one-of-a-kind treasures and pieces to complement or enhance your home.  Whether it’s Shabby Chic, French Country, or Modern decor you are looking for, it can be found at many of these local Markets.

Horseshoe Market – Saturday, July 12th – 9am-4pm is held at 4345 W. 46th Ave – behind the Olinger Moore Chapel.  This Market features over 100 Colorado vendors who sell their art, handmade crafts and vintage treasures.  Enjoy DIY workshops, Live Music, Food Trucks and more.

A Paris Street Market – Held the first Saturday of every month from May through October from 8am – 3pm in the parking lot of the Aspen Grove Shopping Center in Littleton.  This Market started on a rainy day in 2001 and has continued to grow each year into a wonderful vintage, antique and artisan market.  Many of the vendors have participated each year for 14 years.

Mile High Flea Market – is a year-round, open-air shopping and gathering place where all kinds of people come to buy and sell new and used stuff.  The Market is located on 80-acres near Henderson, CO and is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7am – 5pm.  There is fun for all – parents can shop, kids can ride on the roller coaster or other rides, and there are plenty of food options, and year round Farmer’s Market.  

Hampden Street Antique Market – In business for 20 years, the Hampden Street Antique Market features over 120 booths filled with antique furniture, jewelry, decorative pieces, clothing, art, and collectibles.  It is a well kept secret and worth the visit.  It is located on the Southeast corner of Hampden and Yosemite and is open 7 days a week.

TRI Vintage and Wares – Is located in a little cottage in Lafayette, CO.  They specialize in vintage furniture and collectibles and fair trade items.  They are a socially conscious business using only what can be recycled.  They also donate a percentage of proceeds to local and international non-profits.  They are open every day of the week except Monday.

Antique Row Market – For high end antiques, furniture, and hardware this is the place to go.  They also provide custom reproductions, cabinetry and millwork.  They are located at 1710 S. Broadway in the Broadway Antique’s Row and their showroom occupy’s 9,000 s.f.

Highland’s Garden Village Summer Film Series – Highland’s Garden Village is an award winning, 27 acre, mixed-use development built on the former Elitch Garden Amusement Park site at 38th Ave. and Tennyson. Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, Sloan’s Lake – Saturday and Sunday, July 19th & 20th.  Enjoy a cultural experience honoring the ancient Chinese Sport of Dragon Boat Racing.  A Sport that’s catching on across the US, as well as internationally, with competitions and cultural festivals held worldwide.   The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival has grown from 16 teams in its first year to over Fifty teams this year.  Watch as teams of 18 rowers race across Sloan’s Lake in boats with colorfully painted dragon heads and tails.

Once a sleepy street with a few restaurants and retail boutiques, Old South Pearl Street has become a bustling street with the newly constructed Izakaya Den and popular Sushi Den, soon to be built Tavern, Session Kitchen, Stella’s Coffee Haus and an eclectic mix of retail boutiques such as Gracie’s, 5 Green Boxes, Common Threads and The Whole Cat.  With more people and families moving into the neighborhood, more local events have been created to serve the growing community.  Some of the most popular are:

The Pearl Street Farmer’s Market – Sundays 9am – 1pm.  

In 2001, the Pearl Street Farmer’s Market started on the 1500 block of South Pearl St. with 10 vendors.  Now, twelve seasons later the market has grown to 60 vendors and attracts thousands of shoppers each season.  The Pearl Street Farmer’s Market is held every Sunday from mid-May til the end of October.  Aside from fresh local produce, baked goods, and organic farm raised meats, the Market provides fun for all.  There is live music each week, face painting, a balloon artist and lots of food trucks.  Each week is a different theme, and a Flea Market is added the last Sunday of every month.  For more information on the Market please visit: http://southpearlstreet.com/events/

Music Festivals – The second Saturday of June & August – Noon – 10pm.

BrewGrass Festival, Saturday June 14th: Come enjoy live music, local brews, and food on the 1200 block of S. Pearl St.  Admission is only $5 and featured bands include: Packway Handle Band, White Water Ramble, Miner, Milk Drive, Finnders & Youngberg, and Acoustic Mining Company.  

Blues & Brews Festival, Saturday August 9th: Featuring the same goods as the BrewGrass Festival, except you will be listening to some good ol’ Blues by the Bob Margolin Band, Carolyn Wonderland Band, The Young Ancients, Lionel Young Band, Erica Brown Group, and Eef & the Blues Express.
